How To Avoid Having a Disaster Such as this!
This couple hired their officiant off the equivilant of Craigslist. In and of itself that is not totally bad--we will list on Craigslist at certain times of the year. However, they did not follow up to find out more about him. After their wedding they received information from the local authorities that he was authorized to do the ceremony. Now, they have to spend additional money to make sure their marriage is legal.
How can you avoid this?
1. Research your state laws governing who is authorized to perform ceremonies in your jurisdiction. This is very simple and should not take more than a few minutes of your time. We have been called out at the last minute when a couple realizes that their officiant is not approved.
2. Visit the officiant's website. What professional organization are they members of? Does the officiant show photos of weddings similar to yours? Are there testimonials on the website from previous couples?
3. Look them up on trusted wedding sites. Are they on Wedding Wire, the Knot, MyWedding.com ? Do they have reviews on any of those sites? Are they endorsed by other professionals?
4. Check with other professionals you are working with to see what they know about your officiant.
5. Ask for referrals from other couples who had ceremonies similar to what you want.
